IMANTA has a new logo! Many thanks to Raina Mithrush for designing this along with our new banner, which was used for the first time in September at the Winspear Centre.

This year’s Latvian Independence Day celebration is being organized using suggestions from our enthusiastic newer members, with the intent of making our event accessible to more families. We will be celebrating with a potluck style event, with Latvian foods and recipes. Your relatives, friends, or Google can help you decide which delicious Latvian food to make. Please let us know what dish you’ll be bringing to help us plan the menu.

Reaching out for Immigration Stories for Canada’s 150

“I am editing on behalf of various Edmonton organizations, an upcoming E-book with the planned title: “150 Stories of Reconciliation – Connecting Us All”. The book, meant to commemorate Canada 150, will consist of short non-fictional stories (750 words max) from community writers across as many as possible of the immigrant communities in Edmonton, old and new, of all races and from all cultures and continents.
I’m reaching out to see if you could spread word of our project to all potentially interested among people of Latvian heritage in Edmonton that you represent, in the chance of possible contribution of one or two stories for the E-book from that community. Alternately, kindly provide me with email or Facebook addresses of persons potentially interested in contributing a story, that I can follow up with.
The deadline of submission is September 30. We launch the book on November 30. Those interested in contributing a community story or personal one, can reach me at (780) 990-6877, or through connectingusallstories@gmail.com for a detailed information package.
Thank you in advance for your kind support.”
Best wishes,

Tololwa M Mollel
Editor, “Stories of Reconciliation – Connecting Us All” E-book.

March 2017

IMANTA IS 70 YEARS OLD! Our society was founded on March 8, 1947, and is still the oldest active Latvian society in Canada. Viola Baker, one of the original founders, recently celebrated her 95th birthday. Both milestones are remarkable achievements. We will recognize this anniversary at our March 26th event below.

In preparation for Latvia’s centenary celebrations next year, a special Latvian flag is travelling to Latvians around the world. It’s making its way to Alberta via the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan, and then to to Vancouver, Kelowna, across to Europe, USA and South America, returning to Latvia next year. This project is a youth initiative created in 2015 in anticipation of Latvia’s 100 birthday in 2018.
